D.W. BUTLER, 88, CONFEDERATE VET. DIED OF ILLNESS
WELL KNOWN RESIDENT PASSED AWAY AFTER BRIEF ILLNESS AT HOME OF DAUGHTER IN
CLIFTON HILL--SERVICES HERE SUNDAY.
D. W. Butler, wellknown Mexico resident and 88 year old Confederate veteran
of the Civil War, succumbed to a brief illness at the home of his daughter,
Mrs. Ida Key, at Clifton Hill, Friday afternoon, his death being widely
regretted here by many friends. He had been ill since Sunday.
Funeral services will be held at 2:30 o'clock Sunday afternoon from the
Claude Hulen home on East Jackson St., with Rev. J.W. Hardesty, Primitive
Baptist Minister of Columbia officiating.
Mr. Butler was born in Ripley Co., Indiana and grew to manhood there. He
came to Missouri in 1890 and located on a farm twelve miles northwest of
Mexico, moving to Mexico in 1910.
Mr. Butler had resided in Mexico for many years. He enlisted with the
Confederacy forces during the war and was a sergeant in Co. C, Second
Missouri Calvary, under Colonel Coleman's command, in Marmaduke's brigade,
of General Sterling Price's division. He was 88 years old on October 17.
Twelve children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Butler, and ten survive. Two are
deceased. A devout Christian, Mr. Butler was a member of the Primitive
Baptist Church.
Surviving him are Mrs. Claude Hulen (Libbie) and Mrs. Pritchett Hume
(Flossie) of Mexico, Mrs. Grayson Carr(Jessie Maude) of Oakwood, Mrs. Dora
Bever of Anoka, Minn., Mrs. James Mack (Edith) of Independence, Mrs. Roe
Barton(Ama) of Shackleford, Mrs. Harve Richardson(Mae) of St. Joseph, Mrs
Ida Key of Clifton Hill, Charles A. Butler of Montana, and W. W. Butler of
Sheridan, Wyo. Mrs. Butler, his devoted wife, died May 30, 1924.

MRS. D.W. BUTLER DIES AT HER HOME HERE SATURDAY
WAS 72 YEARS OF AGE AND CAUSE OF DEATH WAS DUE TO COMPLICATIONS LEAVES HER
HUSBAND AND ONE SISTER AND TEN CHILDREN.
Mrs. D. W. Butler, age 72, died at her home at 715 E. Jackson street,
Saturday, May 31, at 8 p.m. Mrs. Butler was suddenly taken ill Thursday.
Complications of distress was pronounced as the cause for her death. Prior
to her sudden turn for the worse, she had been ill for three weeks, and it
was thought all danger was past, so the news of her death comes as a shock
to her many friends here.
Mrs. Butler was formerly Miss Eliza E.(llen) Nesbitt, daughter of Benjamin
and Sarah J.(ane Evilsizer) Nesbitt. She was born in Ohio, Jan. 20, 1852. In
August 20, 1873, she was married to David W. Butler. Twelve children were
born to this union, one of which died in childhood.
Those who survive her besides her husband are: Charles Butler, of Chouteau
Mont., Wm. Butler, Denver, Colo., Mrs. Harve Richardson, St. Joe, Mo., Mrs.
Geo. Key, Centralia, Mo., Mrs. Claude Hulen of Vandalia, Mo., Mrs. Grayson
Carr, Oakwood, Mo., Mrs. Walter Bever, Anoka, Minn., Mrs. Pritchett Hume,
Mexico, Mo., Mrs. Roe Barton, Shackleford, Mo. and Mrs. James Mack, of
Independence, Mo. Also one sister mourns her death: Mrs. Elizabeth Judy of
Champaign, Ill.
Mrs. Butler was a splendid Christian character, a devoted mother and beloved by all who knew her. The pallbearers are six son-in-laws as follows: Greyson Carr, of Oakwood, Mo., James Mack, Independence, Roe Barton, Shackelford, George A. Key, Sturgeon, Pritchet Hume, Mexico and Claude Hulen
of Vandalia. The honorary pallbearers will be E. R. Locke, S. M. Locke, J.R. Jesse and W. A. Sharp.
Funeral services will take place from the home Tuesday at 3 p.m., June 3.
The service will be conducted by the Rev. W. J. Hardesty of Middletown, Mo.,
of the Primitive Baptist Church. Burial will take place at Elmwood cemetery.
