Audrain County Cemeteries

New Mt. Zion Church Cemetery

Sec. 25, T50N, R7W. About one mile south of Martinsburg west side of CoRd #751, north of and adjacent to St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery.

The church was organized in 1887 and and  services were conducted in the school house until the church was built in 1895. Before the church was organized as a Baptist church, services were held at the home of   "Uncle" Mose McMurtry, his wife Mary and their three children. This was the first black family to settle in Martinsburg.

This list is derived from canvasses done by Ted Farnen, Dan Farnen and Mrs. Frank S. Paxson in 1976 and additions by Gene Gallagher and some gleaned from newspapers. Not all burial names are marked but it is reasonably certain that all listed are buried here.

"Some years after the church discontinued services, the vacant building was burned by arsonists. The saddest thing is that nothing had been removed from it and antique furniture, bibles and the church's history were destroyed."
